Sufism is a mystical spiritual path that might be thought of as an organized inquiry into the deeper aspects of life. It is no exaggeration to say that for the Sufis who make this inquiry, music is essential for spiritual development. Hidayat Inayat-Khan, who in addition to being a living musical treasure for Western formal music, is also a Pir-o-Murshid, or Sufi teacher, has composed numerous musical settings of Sufi practices.
