With this CD, we (Bob Day on flugelhorn and myself on piano) have tried to set out an unusual ambient aural landscape that will draw the listener in with a hauntingly mysterious musical narrative. Not only is this recording a vehicle for virtuosic soloing, it sympathetically provides an envelope of sound and distant voices that support the performances. It was a priviledge to have made this CD with Bob who will be remembered as one of the great Jazz musicians of our time.

Over the years, I have tried to create a distinctive approach to music; one that combines emotional Eastern melodic lines with the rich harmonies of Western composition. Drawing on the improvised freedom of jazz, it is possible to offer this keyboard style as a connection for the listener, a sharing of the depth and understanding that both these musical traditions so beautifully express.

Acoustic Piano Solos

"This dreamy set of piano solos is distinguished by Sill's use of arrangements that possess both an eastern and western style and sense of melody. Inspired by two sources, Sufi spiritual traditions and nature imagery, there are waltzes, a short raga, poetic odes to dreams, deserts, stars and spring. All, of course without words. It is interesting to hear the solo piano ease back and forth between melodies that are distinctly representing two different modes of music. There are some combinations of notes that are unmistakably Arabic or Indian, which comes as a surprise, since music from those cultures is usually carried by stringed instruments or flutes. This strikes me as one of the most inventive of the solo piano efforts because in it's simplicity, it is suggestive of so much more. Just like poetry, where an economy of words can convey more potent imagery than wordier essays, the composer here gets a maximum amount of effect with a minimal amount of notes. Less is definitely more on Sill's piano album, where a sprinkling of notes insinuates a special place where different cultures connect and flow together".

Piano Music For An Illuminated Sky
Healing Moon is an unedited, 51 minute solo piano performance that travels with mysterious luminosity in the rhythms of human love and the etheric enfoldment of spiritual healing. As a source of mystical revelation, the moon has been an object of meditation and wonder for centuries; an icon of the longing heart reaching into the depths of the unapparent, inner life. I recorded this music after an evening's meditation beside a mountain lake. It is a spiritual inquiry: one made possible by receptivity to Nature around and within us and is an attempt to understand healing and it's universal presence through a single, focussed and sympathetic improvised piano solo.
